Oracle Linux is an operating system engineered for open cloud infrastructure, which includes the fully supported Oracle Linux KVM feature. Oracle Linux KVM is the same hypervisor used in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, making this operating system perfect for hybrid environments and makes it easier to move workloads onto Oracle Cloud. Since VyOS works perfectly in KVM-virtualized hypervisors, this allows using the same VyOS + Oracle Linux solution for both on-premises and cloud.

Ease of Deployment

The deployment process is straightforward. You can engage an unlimited number of VyOS routers on Oracle KVM from template images. During deployment of VyOS images you can specify computing resources, add SSH keys and configure networking along the way. The system will be ready to use from the first boot.

Benefits

  • icon-computer

VyOS allows operating virtualized resources more effectively due to algorithmic optimization of paths between the resources and the external networks. The traffic does not need to pass a single point of network twice like it does with traditional hardware routers.

  • icon-check-box

The main strength of using VyOS with Oracle Linux is that all virtual and physical machines use the VyOS router for interconnection, which allows you to connect physical and virtual environments or networks, benefiting from both.

With Oracle Linux KVM and VyOS you get:

  • High performance and scalability of computing resources and networks

  • Support of servers with up to 2048 logical CPUs and 64TB of memory

  • Extended support of networking features for virtual environments

  • Enterprise-level hypervisor and router in the same physical machine

Simple to Manage, Monitor, and Configure.

Oracle Linux Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) can be easily managed, monitored and configured by deploying Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager. This server virtualization management platform is packed with enterprise-grade performance and supported by the Oracle team. It is based on the oVirt project that comes with a REST API and a web-based UI for ease of use.

VyOS similarly provides a unified CLI to control all network functionality and automation options like Ansible modules, SaltStack support, and an HTTP API for custom integrations.

There is no time for workflow disruption and infrastructure failure.

The downtime is expected to be minimal, if any at all. VyOS on Oracle Linux KVM offers:

  • High availability that allows switching the traffic to an operable router, reliably and automatically restarting failed ones in case of unexpected outages.

  • Planned maintenance will no longer cause an issue with service outages. VyOS routers can migrate to another server without traffic interruption.

  • Routers can be cloned or backed up, so you can always be ready for disaster recovery in case you need it.

Designed with Open Cloud Infrastructure in mind

Both Oracle Linux and VyOS are based on open source technologies and open standard protocols. You never will be vendor-locked using this combination. Thanks to open cloud principles, you will make your applications easier to support, manage, and deploy – these are the key points you most likely often have in mind.

The “Why”

The top reasons for building your virtualization with Oracle Linux KVM:

  • Accelerated deployment with ready-to-go VyOS images.

  • Increased performance and security for virtual networks.

  • Simplified management of the full stack – virtual machines and virtual network.
